Spider menu at California bug fest
LOS ANGELES – Hungry? How about tempura-battered fried Tarantula for an appetizer? They’re frozen then defrosted before bug chef David George Gordon cuts off the abdomen, singes off hairs with a lighter and dunks the remaining spider body into batter. “You just have to brown it up for a couple of minutes. Then I add my secret
ingredient, a pinch of smoked paprika for flavour. The best part are the legs,” said Gordon, speaking at an insect cooking demonstration in Hollywood aimed at showcasing insects as a sustainable food. Other treats being served up at the third annual Bug-A-Thon at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Hollywood on Friday includes Scorpion Scaloppine and dishes consisting of the chef’s choice bugs: grasshoppers, cockroaches and other savory surprises. Considered the planet’s most sustainable source of eco-friendly and inexpensive animal protein, the practice of eating insects is practiced globally by two-thirds of the world’s population, said Andrea Silverman, the manager of Ripley’s Hollywood, who said the demonstration aimed to spread the word about the nutritional value of bugs.

Fear of heights to aim for slack line record
FRANKFURT - An Austrian man tip-toed along a line strung 185 metres (607 feet) off the ground in Frankfurt on Saturday, attempting to set a new world record for “highlining” despite his fear of heights. Reinhard Kleindl, 32, used only his arms to balance as he walked twice along a 30-metre-long polyester rope anchored to the two wings of Frankfurt’s U-shaped skyscraper Tower 185 above hundreds of cheering supporters. Kleindl said he was trying to set a new record for walking the highest urban highline, but no one was immediately available from the World Slackline Federation to confirm if this was a new record. According to Kleindl, the previous record was set by a group of French adrenaline junkies on a line about 120 metres above the ground, between the Les Mercuriales twin towers in Paris, two years ago. Unlike tightropes, slacklines are not held rigidly taut, making it harder to balance. After completing his walks, Kleindl whooped with joy and admitted he was a bit afraid of heights.“The effect of the height was worse than I had expected. The straight lines of the building just seem to drop down into infinity,” said the long-haired and bearded Austrian. Kleindl, who studied particle physics before becoming a professional slackliner, was due to repeat his walk three times during a two-day skyscraper-themed festival that started on Saturday.

Cafe charges for time rather than coffee
WIESBADEN, Germany, May 27 (UPI) -- A German cafe said it is charging customers for the amount of time they spend in the facility instead of charging them for the items they order. Daria Volkova, 24, founder of the Slow Times cafe in Wiesbaden, said she was inspired by similar cafes in her native Russia, which she left for Germany in 2008, The Local.de reported Monday. Volkova said she is hoping the business model will help the cafe make enough money to support her and her 6-year-old son. "I hope to capture the spirit of the times," Volkova said. Volkova said customers are given time-marked wristbands when they enter the cafe and they are charged $0.04 per minute, amounting to $5.18 per hour.
Volkova said clocks around the cafe are purposefully set to different times to help people stop thinking about time and instead focus on those around them. "It's easier -- and cheaper -- to meet people here than in a bar, where you have to buy expensive drinks," Volkova said.

How a Fisherman sleeps with croc under bed
INNISFAIL, Australia, May 24 (UPI) -- An Australian fisherman who caught a 6 1/2-foot crocodile on his birthday said he took the animal home and had it sleep under his bunk bed. Ashley Sala said he was fishing in Ninds Creek in the Cassowary Coast Region, 55 miles south of Cairns, on his birthday Tuesday and initially believed he had hooked a barracuda, The Cairns Post reported Friday. "I threw my line out to catch a barra for my birthday and I ended up catching a croc," Sala said. Sala said he was "starting to feel sorry for" the crocodile, which likely would not have survived if he had not untangled the beast, which he pulled it from the water, taped its jaws shut and drove to the home of his local councilor to complain about the local crocodile population. Councilor Mark Nolan advised Sala to keep the croc safe until it could be picked up by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, so he took the reptile home. Sala said his girlfriend sent him and their reptile guest to an empty cabin at their trailer park, where the crocodile slept under his bunk.
I sat on the top bunk and had a few birthday beers by myself and watched the croc on the floor until I fell asleep," Sala said. Nolan said he was impressed with Sala's feat, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported. "Paul Hogan's got nothing on Ashley Sala," he said, comparing Sala to the "Crocodile Dundee" actor. "Paul Hogan never slept with a saltie. Ashley has, and I witnessed it. "So I give Ashley a 10 out of 10 for the way he cared for the reptile during the night and now it's been relocated and it's safely back in a crocodile farm," Nolan said.

Why Sex butler among top 10 concierge services
What are hotel concierge services?
Essentially, a concierge is a man at a hotel who gets paid to do tasks (with an obligatory smile on his face) for wealthy and demanding guests. This can be anything from running miscellaneous errands to making reservations at restaurants, arranging concert tickets, or even other more clandestine requests, if you catch my drift.
The Sex Butler-The increasing popularity of the more intimate "boutique hotel" has altered what is expected in the way of bedroom services and amenities. After all, do weary travelers actually find solace in an old copy of Gideon’s Bible, or would they rather open their bedside drawer to find a "fun pack" filled with condoms, lube and porn? The Indigo Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona, is one of many hotels that have embraced the notion that replacing traditional room supplies with something people might actually use, like sexual paraphernalia, is a good idea. They even offer a "one-night stand package", which includes some of the kinky things mentioned and a "late checkout time" of 1 p.m.
